Car hood and headlight covered in spring pollen and lovebugs in Houston

Houston's climate is hard on cars. Between bugs, pollen, bird droppings, heat and humidity, paint takes a beating. Here's what to watch for, and how a regular self-serve wash protects your finish.

Spring: pollen and lovebugs

Oak pollen coats cars in yellow-green dust every spring, and lovebugs show up in large numbers in late spring (and again in late summer/early fall). Splattered lovebugs are acidic and can etch clear coat if they sit in the sun.

  • Wash every week during peak season
  • Hit the front bumper, grille and mirrors with tire & wheel cleaner first to loosen bugs
  • Apply wax: bugs release more easily from a waxed surface

Summer: sun, heat and Saharan dust

UV and 95°F+ days fade paint and bake contaminants in. Some summers bring Saharan dust that settles on everything.

  • Wash early morning or at night (we're open 24/7/365)
  • Always finish with spot-free rinse so water doesn't spot as it dries
  • Keep a shade or cover for the dashboard

Fall and hurricane season

After heavy rains and storms, road film, mud and debris build up on lower panels. Rinse wheel wells and undercarriage areas to remove grime.

Winter: road grime and rain

Houston winters are mild, but rain and road film still dull paint. A wash every two weeks plus wax keeps it looking fresh.

Bird droppings and tree sap

Remove them as soon as possible, since they're acidic and can etch the clear coat within days in the heat. Soak with water, then gently wipe; don't scrub dry.
