Self-serve car washes give you professional equipment for a few dollars, but if you've never used one, the wand, dial and timer can be intimidating. Here's how to get a great result in about 10–15 minutes.

Before you start

  • Pull your floor mats and set them against the bay wall so you can rinse them.
  • Have your card or coins ready: time starts as soon as you pay.
  • Grab a microfiber towel for drying (available in our vending machines).

Step 1: Tire & wheel cleaner

Start with the wheels and the lower third of the car, plus the front bumper and mirrors if they're covered in bugs. Let it dwell for 30–60 seconds while you move on.

Step 2: Rinse the foam brush

Before the brush touches your paint, spray it with the high-pressure wand to blast out grit left by the last user. This is the single most important step to avoid swirl marks.

Step 3: Foam brush, top to bottom

Wash the roof first, then windows, hood, trunk, upper panels and finally the lower panels. Use light pressure and straight lines. Save the wheels for last so you don't drag brake dust onto the paint.

Step 4: High-pressure rinse

Rinse from the top down, keeping the wand a foot or two away from the paint. Don't forget wheel wells, door jambs, grille and mats.

Step 5: Wax

A quick pass of wax adds shine and helps water bead off. It also makes the next wash easier.

Step 6: Spot-free rinse

Always finish here. Spot-free rinse uses purified water with the minerals removed, so it dries without spots, especially important in Houston's hot sun.

Step 7: Vacuum and dry

Pull out of the bay to the vacuum stations so the next customer can wash. Vacuum seats, floors and trunk, then wipe door jambs, mirrors and glass with a microfiber towel.

Safety: Never point the wand at people, pets or skin. Keep it away from emblems, chipped paint and open windows.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the brush rinse (causes scratches)
  • Washing in direct midday sun and letting soap dry
  • Forgetting spot-free rinse
  • Holding the wand too close to the paint
